Projects

Obonto encourages small scale projects in Education, Emplyment and Healthcare. These 3 fields are the fundament on which a communitay can sustain and develop. We try to help the Xhosa people to improve their quality of life and work for a better future.

We also support existing initiatives that contribute to emplyment, education and healthcare in the Transkei. Different NPO's are active in the field. They mainly concententrate on healthcare, education, HIV-information and -prevention. When projects fit in our mission we will support them and work together with other NPO's.

Small scale

Our projects are small scale. We believe in a better chance of succeeding when a project is small and clear.

Money is sended in phases to the executors on the spot.

We make clear agreements about every stage of the project. When demonstrated a stage is ready (with pictures, invoices and other proof) we make new appointments and send the next amount of money.

Selfsustainable

In advance of a project we determine the term (in years) the project should be self sustainable. A project cannot be help dependent and needs to become indepent of our support. After a certain period we hand over the project to the local community. This increases the succes of the project; local communities are responsible in te end and the ownership and future of the project will be guaranteed.

From the need of and together with the local communities

We think a project only can succeed when it emanates from the need of the local community. The community itself needs wo be involved from the very beginning.

This increases the chance the locals feel responsible for the project and takes over ownership.

Local partners

Because we are not able to be on the spot all the time to guide, control and to adjust the project. local partners are indispensable for us.

With these local partners we make agreements about performance of the projects and they inform us regularly about progress, any problems and financial responsibility.
